Sigh…the Kiwi Crew are no more. Duncan Oughton was cut today to make room for a guy we just picked up from Los Angeles – Joseph Ngwenya. It’s part of a larger 5-player deal that sees Columbus send Kyle Martino and John Wolyniec to the Galaxy, while Ned Grabavoy and Joseph Ngwenya head to Columbus. Oughton gets caught in the cross-fire because he’s sitting on an SI slot, and he’s been injured for more than a year. He should have gotten a green card by now, but apparently with the new post-9/11 security in place they don’t trust soccer players from New Zealand or something.
As near as I can tell, the Crew’s three Senior Internationals are now Marcos Gonzalez, Sebastian Rozental and Ngwenya. An interesting cast of characters, but not wholly surprising given Sigi’s connections to Ngwenya and Grabavoy.
I just wish there was a way for us to have kept Oughton until we could see if he could regain his old form. Martino isn’t a huge shock if you believe the rumor mill, and I won’t miss Wolyniec at all. Oughton, though…call me a softie but I liked what he brought to the table even beyond his playing ability.
I’m not sure who the “elder statesman” of the Crew is now – possibly Jon Busch. Of course, with Warzycha and Lapper as assistant coaches that’s two former players who go back to at least ’97 – so it’ s not like the Crew has completely lost its collective memory.
Happy trails, Duncan – we’ll miss you.
