The other day I was reading an old Wired magazine article on the DARPA Grand Challenge, and I got to thinking about how much more “great science” has been in the news lately. Starting with the two Mars rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) – which at 2 years old are still scurrying around – and continuing with the private sector’s Ansari X Prize and the aforementioned Grand Challenge. This article by the Christian Science Monitor sums up the private sector developments much better than I can, so I highly recommend it.
At times when I get depressed about all the heartache (Katrina, Pakistani earthquakes, etc) and needless focus on irrelevancies (Angelina’s having twins!), it really helps to remember that there are still some really positive things going on in the world.
